President Lazarus Chakwera has formally established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent death of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others in a plane crash.

The commission, announced through a press release by the Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba, has been tasked with examining all aspects related to the individuals’ tragic demise and providing a comprehensive report within 30 days.

The move aims to address and end longstanding calls for an inquiry that concerned parties, like Chilima’s widow, Mary, believe will help answer many of the questions they have.

The inquiry will be chaired by Justice Jabbar Alide and includes several prominent figures, notably Sylvester Namiwa, the Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), who has been vocal about transparency and accountability regarding the accident.

Other commission members include senior government officials, legal experts, and representatives from civil society, ensuring a diverse panel to thoroughly investigate the matter.
