Blantyre DHO, DHSS shine in MALGA awards

Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) and its Director of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Gift Kawalazira have emerged as top performers, receiving prestigious awards from the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) for their outstanding contributions to decentralized health service delivery.
The recognition highlights the DHO’s commitment to providing essential health services across the district, while Kawalazira was praised for his leadership in driving improvements within the local health system.
Reacting to the Kawalazira credited the award to the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders, including health workers, development partners, and the media, which have helped make health care more accessible to the district’s population.
“We couldn’t have achieved this without the support of our partners,” said Kawalazira. “The media has played a key role in keeping the public informed, and decentralization has allowed us to deliver tailored services more efficiently.”
Under Kawalazira’s leadership, Blantyre DHO has made significant strides in areas such as maternal and child health, communicable disease control, and health education. He noted that despite challenges such as resource constraints, the DHO remains focused on ensuring that no one in the district is left behind in accessing health services.
“Our goal is to keep improving health outcomes for everyone, especially in hard-to-reach areas. We are focused on expanding our outreach programs and increasing access to services like immunization and HIV/AIDS treatment,” he said.
Kawalazira also praised the dedication of health workers across the district, stating that their commitment has been instrumental in the DHO’s success.
The award positions Blantyre DHO as a model for other districts, showcasing the impact of effective leadership and collaboration in improving health care under the decentralization policy.
