MPSM condemns Israel’s attacks on Gaza

The Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement (MPSM) has strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, calling the actions “inhumane and unjustifiable.”
The group, which has long supported the Palestinian cause, is urging the international community, including the Malawian government, to take a firm stance against what it calls the “brutal occupation” of Palestinian territories by Israeli forces.
Speaking at a media breakfast meeting in Blantyre, MPSM National Coordinator, Asabuni Phiri expressed deep concern over the mounting casualties in Gaza, where civilians, including women and children, have been caught in the crossfire.

The recent escalation of violence has seen Israeli airstrikes targeting densely populated areas, resulting in widespread destruction and the loss of hundreds of lives.
“A Humanitarian Catastrophe”
Speaking on behalf of the solidarity movement, Phiri did not mince words in his criticism of the Israeli military offensive, describing it as a violation of international law and a blatant disregard for human rights.
“We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. The indiscriminate bombing of residential neighborhoods, hospitals, and schools is not only a war crime but also an affront to humanity. No people should have to live under such conditions of terror and oppression,” said Phiri.
He further accused Israel of using disproportionate force in its military response to the conflict, noting that Palestinians have lived under a blockade and occupation for decades, with their basic rights systematically denied.
“The people of Gaza are already living under siege, and now they are being subjected to relentless airstrikes with nowhere to seek refuge. This is not about defense—this is the collective punishment of an entire population. Israel must be held accountable for these actions,” Phiri emphasized in his address.
Calls for International Intervention
The MPSM is now calling on global powers including the media, especially those in the West, to take meaningful steps in addressing the situation in Gaza.
He pointed out the role that major international players like the United States have had in supporting Israel, both diplomatically and militarily, and argued that this support has emboldened the Israeli government to act with impunity.
“The international community, particularly Western powers, have turned a blind eye to the plight of the Palestinian people for far too long. The United States continues to provide military aid to Israel, which it uses to sustain the occupation and carry out these brutal attacks. It’s time for the world to hold Israel accountable and to push for an immediate ceasefire,” said Bakili.
He also called on the United Nations to take decisive action, urging it to enforce resolutions that support the protection of Palestinian civilians and their right to self-determination.
“The United Nations has passed countless resolutions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but little has been done to enforce them. We urge the UN to act swiftly to stop the violence and ensure that Palestinians are granted the rights and freedoms they deserve as a people,” Phiri added.
A Call to Action for Malawi
Phiri also urged the Malawian government to make its voice heard on the issue, appealing to senior government officials to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“As a nation that cherishes peace and justice, Malawi should not remain silent in the face of such atrocities. We appeal to President Chakwera and our leaders to condemn Israel’s aggression and to show support for the Palestinian struggle for freedom. Malawi’s voice in the global arena can make a difference,” he said.
The MPSM also encouraged Malawians to educate themselves on the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to engage in advocacy efforts that promote peace and justice.
“We ask our fellow Malawians to stand in solidarity with Palestine, to speak out against injustice, and to join us in calling for an end to the occupation. This is not just a Palestinian issue—it’s a matter of human rights,” said Bakili.

The Human Cost of Conflict
Bakili’s statements come amid a surge in violence in the Israel-Gaza conflict. The recent hostilities were sparked by a series of incidents, including the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli forces and retaliatory rocket fire from Hamas.
The Israeli government claims its military operations are a response to terrorism, while critics argue that the scale of the attacks is disproportionate and indiscriminate.
According to reports from the Gaza Ministry of Health, the death toll continues to rise, with hospitals overwhelmed by the number of casualties. The humanitarian situation in the enclave is dire, as basic supplies like food, water, and medical aid are running low due to the blockade and ongoing airstrikes.
Phiri highlighted the suffering of Palestinian civilians, many of whom are trapped in Gaza with no access to safe shelter.
“The people of Gaza are enduring unimaginable suffering. The world needs to see this for what it is: an occupation that has lasted for over 70 years and a people who are being denied their right to exist in peace,” he stated.
Hope for Peace Amid Despair
Despite the bleak outlook, Phiri expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, calling for renewed dialogue between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
He stressed the need for a two-state solution that guarantees both Israeli and Palestinian peoples the right to live in peace and security.
“There is no military solution to this conflict. Peace can only be achieved through dialogue and mutual recognition of the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians. We continue to advocate for a two-state solution where both nations can coexist with dignity and freedom,” he concluded.
The group has pledged to continue its advocacy until justice is served and peace is achieved in the region.
