Gift of the Givers extends lifeline to Palestine war victims

Mia: We are committed to helping war victims

The Gift of the Givers Foundation has reaffirmed its unwavering support for victims of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, despite facing increasingly dangerous conditions in Gaza.

As the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in the war-torn region, the foundation’s efforts to provide medical aid, food, and essential supplies to those affected have come under constant threat, with reports of their workers being targeted by Israeli forces.

In an interview with Capital FM at the Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement (MPSM) media breakfast in Blantyre, Sherifa Mia, the Country Manager for the Gift of the Givers Foundation in Malawi, emphasized the organization’s commitment to delivering aid in the most difficult of circumstances, regardless of the risks posed by the conflict.

“Our teams on the ground in Gaza are facing immense challenges. They are being targeted by soldiers from the opposition side, making it incredibly dangerous to carry out our humanitarian mission. Despite this, we remain committed to supporting the innocent civilians who are suffering in this war. We must help, even in the face of adversity,” Mia said.

The Gift of the Givers Foundation, a renowned international relief organization, has been actively involved in Palestine for many years, providing critical humanitarian support to victims of conflict and natural disasters. In recent weeks, the foundation has ramped up its operations in Gaza, as thousands of people have been displaced by airstrikes, while hospitals struggle to cope with the surge in casualties.

Mia stressed that the organization’s primary concern is the welfare of civilians, particularly women and children, who are bearing the brunt of the violence.

“Our mission is to save lives. We are providing medical aid, food, water, and other essential supplies to those who are most vulnerable in Gaza. The people there are suffering not just from the bombings, but from a lack of necessities due to the ongoing blockade. Every day, our team members put their lives on the line to bring hope and relief to these communities,” she added.

Mia also called on the international community to offer greater protection for humanitarian workers in conflict zones, noting that the targeting of aid workers was a serious violation of international law.

The breakfast brought together media practitioners from various media houses who were familiarised with the history of the war, among others.

In his remarks, the Chairperson for the Media Council of Malawi (MCM), Jolly Ntaba, called on journalists and media houses to conduct thorough research when reporting on the conflict.

“We understand that the Israel-Palestine conflict is complex and deeply rooted in history. Therefore, journalists must be well-informed before publishing stories on the matter. Thorough research, fact-checking, and seeking credible sources are essential in ensuring that the public receives accurate and unbiased information,” said Ntaba.

“The media has a responsibility to not only inform but also to promote peace and understanding. In this conflict, where misinformation can easily spread, we must ensure that what we report reflects the truth,” Ntaba added.

Tailos Bakili, a senior member of the MPSM added his voice to the growing call for the Malawian government to take a firm stand on the conflict.

Bakili urged Malawi to promote peace and offer diplomatic support for a ceasefire in the region.

He also echoed Mia’s sentiments regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for more international support to aid organizations like the Gift of the Givers, who are working tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of civilians.

“The situation in Gaza is dire. The international community must do more to support humanitarian efforts on the ground. Organizations like the Gift of the Givers are doing incredible work, but they need resources and protection to continue their mission. We urge the global community to step up and help,” Bakili added.
