Kunkuyu dismisses rigging allegations ahead of 2025 elections

Kunkuyu: The allegations are baseless

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has strongly dismissed allegations from opposition parties that the government is plotting to rig the 2025 elections by awarding contracts to foreign companies and procuring questionable electoral devices.

The allegations were made by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), and UTM.

Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre on Friday, Kunkuyu described the accusations as baseless and lacking any credible evidence.

He expressed surprise at the opposition’s concerns over the electoral processes, particularly given that the very procedures and laws they are questioning were passed by the same lawmakers who now criticize them.

Kunkuyu reiterated that all election processes are being conducted transparently and in accordance with Malawian law. He specifically addressed concerns regarding the appointment of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Anabel Mtalimanja. The Minister clarified that Mtalimanja’s appointment followed standard legal procedures, with her nomination coming from the Judiciary, as is customary.

“It is baffling to see opposition parties question an appointment that was made transparently and in line with the law. The MEC Chairperson’s appointment is always handled in a manner that upholds legal and constitutional standards,” Kunkuyu said, further questioning whether the opposition has embraced “the new way of thinking” required to move the country forward.

The Minister also criticized the opposition’s plans to hold nationwide protests over these election-related concerns, calling such actions unfortunate and counterproductive. He emphasized that dialogue should be the preferred method for resolving differences, warning that protests could lead to unnecessary conflict and instability.

“Dialogue is crucial in preventing unnecessary confrontations and chaos. While every citizen has the right to express their views, it is important that we seek peaceful solutions through conversation,” Kunkuyu stated.

Kunkuyu used the opportunity to encourage Malawians to register to vote in the 2025 elections, urging eligible citizens to exercise their democratic rights responsibly and prepare for the upcoming polls.

The issue of electoral integrity is particularly sensitive in Malawi, given the country’s history of disputed elections and allegations of electoral misconduct. However, Kunkuyu’s remarks aim to reassure the public that the government is committed to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, guided by a transparent legal framework.

As the 2025 elections draw closer, the political climate is expected to become more charged. Kunkuyu’s statements suggest the government is keen to keep the electoral process on track and maintain order, despite growing tensions from opposition parties. How these dynamics unfold will be crucial for Malawi’s democracy in the coming months.
