Ntchana joins UTM presidency race
Musician and youth advocate Fredokiss, born Penjani Kalua, has officially announced his candidacy for the UTM Party presidency.
He became the sixth candidate to express interest in the role ahead of the party’s convention in November.
Kalua made the announcement in a Facebook post, where he emphasized the critical need for young people to take an active role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
“It is time for the youth to be bold enough to be counted. We cannot leave this fight to the same players—we must take charge of our future. The journey to 2025 starts now. Let’s shape a brighter Malawi together,” he wrote, signaling his readiness to bring fresh energy and ideas to the party’s leadership.
Fredokiss, widely known for his influence in Malawi’s music and youth advocacy spheres, has long been a proponent of empowering the younger generation to take up leadership roles.
His entry into the political arena adds a youthful and dynamic aspect to the UTM leadership race. He aims to bring innovative approaches to governance, with a focus on youth development, economic empowerment, and inclusive leadership.
In his campaign, Kalua is expected to capitalize on his popularity among Malawi’s youth, a demographic that constitutes a significant portion of the country’s population and has often felt underrepresented in politics.
His decision to run comes at a time when the need for fresh, youthful leadership in Malawian politics has become a key conversation, as many citizens are calling for change ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Other prominent figures who have also declared their intentions to contest for the UTM presidency include Mathews Mtumbuka, Patricia Kaliati, Dalitso Kabambe, and Newton Kambala.
Kalua’s bid for the presidency signals a potential shift in the political landscape, as he encourages young people to take charge of their future and actively participate in shaping the nation’s destiny.
The November convention will serve as a platform for UTM Party members to select a leader who can rally support and lead the party into the 2025 general elections.
