NMC Eyeing More Charity Initiatives

Malekezo (c): we needed to join them as they celebrate their day

Nyika Media Club (NMC) plans to engage in more charity and development work, as the club aims to extend journalists’ roles beyond merely exposing issues affecting the citizenry.

Feston Malekezo, the NMC Chairperson, echoed this on Tuesday when the northern region-based media club visited women in the antenatal and postnatal wards at Mzuzu Urban Health Centre.

NMC, with support from Partners for the North (PFN), Nyika Properties, and Awalanje Investment and Civil Engineering Company, donated assorted items including wrappers (Zitenje), sugar, and soap worth MK500,000 to the women to celebrate this year’s Mother’s Day.

Speaking during the donation, Malekezo emphasized that they will continue supporting where they can as a group.

“So, as a club, this is the direction we are taking. We do write stories, but as journalists, we can also lend a hand and help. We have a lot of networks and talk to many people who can support our initiatives,” Malekezo said.

He added, “We should not stop at writing stories. There are several stories that we pursue, but they lack support. Through us, we can mobilize resources and assist wherever we can. This is also a call to our partners and sponsors to collaborate with us so that together we can develop our communities.”

Commenting on the donation, Malekezo said the club felt that after writing stories about mothers, it was time to connect with them, appreciate them, and celebrate with them on their special day.

“We thought that after writing compelling stories about mothers, documenting what they are doing in the country, and profiling them, we needed to join them in celebrating their day, particularly those in the hospital,” Malekezo said.

PFN Community Development Manager Masida Nyandeni Jere said they supported the initiative to give new and expectant mothers something to celebrate while in the hospital.

“We partnered with Nyika Media Club because we share a common goal, which is to support these women as they celebrate Mother’s Day. We teamed up to help these mothers so they can at least have a moment of joy,” Jere said.

Mzuzu Urban Health Centre Labour Ward Nursing Officer Towera Kasanga Gondwe expressed gratitude to NMC and its partners for the donation.

“We are very grateful at Mzuzu Health Centre for the help provided by the journalists and their partners. Some mothers come from very poor backgrounds and lack necessities, so this support will go a long way,” Kasanga Gondwe said.

One of the beneficiaries, Ivy Beza from Elamuleni in Mzimba, expressed her joy: “I am very excited about this gift, and may God bless you and give you more. I was not expecting such a gift, and for this, all I can say is, Amen.
