MERA hikes gas prices

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced an upward revision of the maximum retail price for Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), effective 16th October 2024.
The retail price for 1 kilogram of gas will now be K3,740, up from K3,245, representing a 15.25% increase.
According to MERA, the adjustment is in response to the depreciation of the Malawi Kwacha, which has impacted the costs of importing LPG and reduced returns for industry operators.
In a statement, MERA explained the rationale behind the price increase, noting that the depreciation of the local currency “against major currencies is having an impact on the landed cost of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) product, thereby reducing the return on investment for operators in the industry.”
The statement further noted that the move is intended to maintain the viability of the LPG supply chain in Malawi.
Meanwhile, MERA Chief Executive Officer Henry Kachaje has urged LPG operators to display the prescribed maximum retail prices in their business premises, stating that “the prescribed maximum retail prices for LPG should be displayed on visible signage.”
