The Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has once again urged the government and other stakeholders to ensure the inclusion of persons with albinism in various national development initiatives.

APAM President, Young Muhamba, expressed concern that people with albinism continue to be excluded from key social programs, including social cash transfer schemes and essential health services, among other critical activities.

Speaking at a sensitization meeting organized by APAM in Ntchisi district, Muhamba highlighted the importance of recognizing the rights of persons with albinism to fully participate in all spheres of society.

The event brought together various stakeholders, including police officers, traditional leaders, and community members, in an effort to raise awareness and foster inclusivity.

Muhamba noted: “A person with albinism is equal to every other human being. We deserve the same opportunities and respect in development programs as anyone else.”

“It’s disheartening to see that we are often left behind in social and health services that are meant to uplift vulnerable groups.”

He emphasized that the exclusion of people with albinism from such programs not only violates their rights but also perpetuates the stigma and discrimination they face.

He called on the government to take concrete actions to rectify these gaps and ensure the meaningful inclusion of persons with albinism in all national development efforts.

The sensitization meeting is part of APAM’s broader efforts to combat the marginalization of persons with albinism, who have historically faced discrimination and violent attacks due to widespread misconceptions about the condition.

By involving key community leaders and local authorities, APAM hopes to create lasting change at the grassroots level.

In a call to the international community, Muhamba appealed for more support, particularly in areas such as education, healthcare, and protection.

“We need global solidarity in our fight for inclusion and equal rights. The international community can help by providing resources and technical expertise to strengthen our advocacy efforts and enhance the well-being of persons with albinism,” he clarified.

Muhamba outlined the expected outcomes of the sensitization campaign, including improved access to health services for persons with albinism, increased protection from violence and discrimination, and the inclusion of persons with albinism in social protection programs like social cash transfers.

Meanwhile, Village Headman Kazonga from Traditional Authority Malenga in Ntchisi praised APAM for organizing the meeting, describing it as a crucial step in changing perceptions about persons with albinism.

“This engagement has been an eye-opener for me and my community. I have come to realize that we need to stop viewing people with albinism as different, and instead see them as equals deserving of respect and inclusion in all aspects of life,” he said.

As Malawi continues to advance its development agenda, APAM remains steadfast in its advocacy for the full inclusion of persons with albinism in national programs, ensuring that no one is left behind.
