NGORA calls for stronger NGO-Government collaboration to achieve common goals

Chileka Banda: This misalignment leads to duplicated efforts

The Non-Governmental Organizations Regulatory Authority (NGORA) has expressed concern that some NGOs are not aligning their policies with government agendas, hindering progress toward common national goals.

NGORA Executive Director, Edward Chileka Banda, raised this issue during a sectoral workshop on education held in preparation for the NGO Day on 16 October 2024, in Blantyre.

“The workshop is part of the 2024 NGO Day commemoration. This is a day for NGOs to showcase their contribution to national development,” Banda explained.

He acknowledged the significant contributions NGOs are making to Malawi’s education sector but pointed out that the lack of policy alignment is undermining collaboration between NGOs and the government.

“This misalignment leads to duplicated efforts, preventing the nation from realizing the full impact of these initiatives,” Banda added.

The workshop, he noted, aims to bring together stakeholders to find ways to improve access to education and enhance collaboration.

Kwataine: Chakwera is committed

Presidential Advisor on NGOs, Martha Kwataine, reiterated President Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to ensuring that NGOs operate in a free and fair environment.

“NGOs contribute greatly to national development and need full support. From President Chakwera’s perspective, sectoral workshops like this are crucial,” she said.

Kwataine also mentioned that First Lady Monica Chakwera appreciates the role of NGOs and actively supports their efforts.

The 2024 NGO Day, to be presided over by President Chakwera, will be commemorated under the theme Strengthening Partnership and Capacity in the NGO Sector: A Panacea for Achieving the 2063 Agenda.
