VP Usi Heads to Morocco for UN oceans conference, diplomatic talks
Vice President Michael Usi has departed Malawi for Morocco, where he will attend the African Consultation in preparation for the Third United Nations Oceans Conference, scheduled to take place in Tangier on 9th October 2024.
This high-level 2025 UN Conference will focus on advancing Sustainable Development Goal 14, which aims to conserve and sustainably manage oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.
During the previous Ocean Decade Conference, held in Barcelona, Spain in April 2024, global leaders discussed ways to strengthen the sustainable management of the world’s oceans and promote science-based innovations, with a focus on inclusivity and local impact.
In addition to attending the UN Oceans Conference, Usi will engage in bilateral talks with Moroccan government officials to strengthen diplomatic relations between Malawi and Morocco.
The discussions follow the recent opening of Malawi’s new Embassy in Rabat, Morocco.
Following his visit to Morocco, the Vice President will travel to Baku, Azerbaijan, where he will participate in the Pre-Conference of Parties (Pre-Co) to the UN Climate Change Conference, taking place from 10th to 12th October 2024.
The Pre-Co will address key climate solutions in preparation for COP29, set for November 2024.
He is expected to return to Malawi on Monday, 14th October 2024.
