DoDMA bails out hunger stricken families in Thyolo
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs-DoDMA has distributed 12,000 bags of relief maize to households affected by hunger in Thyolo district.
This comes as the hunger situation in the district is dire with 70,000 being in need of- food aid.
The distribution was a response for a request to DoDMA for maize relief in Luchenza and Mangunda areas that are heavily affected by hunger
Thyolo District Commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga has urged the beneficiaries to use the maize wisely and not sell it to vendors.
Kuphanga has since disclosed that the government is planning to distribute lean season relief maize to 58,000 people in the district.
In his remarks, Stain Chaima who is deputy commissioner for South Eastern Region Police concurred with Kuphanga warning that those caught selling the maize would face legal consequences.
One of the beneficiaries, Gine George from Chilomo Village in Traditional Authority Nanseta, expressed her gratitude for the timely aid.
“The devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy and the severe drought have left our community struggling with famine. This maize brings much-needed relief and hope,” George said.
