CYECE sound alarm on hunger effects on children
Child rights campaigners are sounding an alarm on the devastating effects of hunger on children and calls for immediate interventions.
The plea comes as some parts of the country grapple with severe hunger, forcing people to eat wild roots to survive.
Recently, a 7-year-old child died while two others were admitted to Machinga district hospital after eating suspected poisonous fruits.
The Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education-CYECE observes that ongoing hunger crisis has severe consequences on children development, mental health, and overall well-being.
CYECE Executive Director of the Lucky Mbewe appeals to councils to support vulnerable children with food aid, education and healthcare.
“The councils were bound to make necessary efforts to support needs and aspirations of children. As such, we are wondering that up until now, we are seeing children suffering, dying of eating dangerous shrubs because of hunger. What it entails is that we have councils that are not considerate on the rights of the child
As a country, we don’t need to be reminded that we are a signatory to state party protocols” Mbewe pointed.
