Mutharika calls for national unity to drive development

Mutharika: We must be united

Former President Peter Mutharika used the Mulhako wa Alhomwe festival to raise concerns over several issues he believes are exacerbating Malawi’s socio-economic problems.

Among the challenges he addressed were education, human trafficking, and political misunderstandings.

As patron of the Lhomwe cultural group, Mutharika claimed that a political party, which he did not name, has been pressuring traditional leaders in the Lhomwe belt to support their agenda or face removal from their positions.

He called for an end to this interference, stressing that the elevation or dethronement of chiefs should be based on cultural traditions, not political interests.

“This type of coercion must stop. Chiefs should not be manipulated by political forces, as their roles are governed by long-standing cultural traditions,” Mutharika said.

In response, political commentator George Chaima emphasized the responsibility of organizers to ensure that political discussions during cultural festivals are meaningful and beneficial to the nation.

He argued that such platforms should not be used to fuel division or controversy but rather to foster dialogue that promotes national unity and development.

Chaima believes that when political issues are discussed at cultural events, they should focus on solutions that address the country’s challenges.

Chaima also highlighted the significance of cultural festivals as spaces for bringing people together from various backgrounds.

He pointed out that these events provide an opportunity for leaders to engage the public in constructive conversations about the nation’s future.

“However, when political debates are introduced, the tone must remain respectful and focused on the greater good, avoiding the temptation to exploit these platforms for partisan gain,” he noted.

He has since urged festival organizers to carefully moderate any political discourse to ensure it remains productive.

He cautioned against allowing cultural gatherings to become battlegrounds for political rivalries, as this could undermine the purpose of the events. Instead, he called for a balanced approach, where discussions contribute to Malawi’s social and economic progress, rather than exacerbate existing tensions.

“Cultural festivals should promote unity and thoughtful discussion, especially when addressing political matters, to prevent further division,” Chaima added.
