CSOs pressure Attorney General to contest Salima Sugar accounts’ freeze

A contingent of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the banner of the Malawi Black Economic Empowerment Movement (MaBlem) has criticized the Commercial Division of the High Court for issuing a freezing order against Salima Sugar Corporation Limited.

Last Friday, the Court issued the order pending the resolution of an ongoing legal dispute between the company and Mukteshwar Sugar Mills Limited.

According to the Chairperson of MaBlem, Robert Mkwezalamba, the court’s decision is questionable as the order was issued without an inter partes hearing.

He further emphasized that the order will negatively impact the company, as it will be forced to halt its operations, which will also affect the entire supply chain.

Meanwhile, MaBlem has joined calls by other organizations, such as the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) which recently urged the Attorney General to challenge the High Court’s decision.
