Chakwera calls for global support

President Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera has returned home after attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he represented Malawi and shared the country’s experiences in tackling climate change.

He expressed optimism that his engagements with various global stakeholders during the trip would lead to significant benefits for Malawi’s development agenda.

In his address at the UNGA, Chakwera stressed the urgent need for global support to help Malawi build resilience against economic shocks.

He highlighted Malawi’s progress in achieving some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), despite the country’s ongoing battles with challenges such as cholera outbreaks, droughts, and cyclones. He emphasized the importance of shifting from words to action when it comes to climate financing and urged developed nations to consider debt cancellation to give least developed countries, like Malawi, the opportunity to catch up on the SDGs.

The President also made a strong case for reforming the United Nations Security Council, advocating for a permanent seat for Africa. He echoed calls for a radical reform of the council to ensure that African nations have a greater voice in global decision-making. In addition, Chakwera pointed to the need for a new development framework beyond 2030, one that emphasizes partnership and fosters competition in human ingenuity, science, technology, and innovation.

Upon his arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, Chakwera remarked that his discussions with developed countries had deepened their understanding of Malawi’s challenges.

He expressed hope that this understanding would lead to tangible support for Malawi, aimed at complementing the country’s development efforts.

Chakwera’s participation at the UNGA underscores Malawi’s determination to secure international backing to address pressing issues, including climate change, economic resilience, and the achievement of SDGs.

Meanwhile, development and governance expert, George Chaima has asked people to always view the president’s external trips with positivity and optimism.
