MCP condemns DPP’s ‘undemocratic’ behavior
The Malawi Congress Party-MCP is demanding that the Democratic Progressive-DPP governor for east, Daudi Chikwanje should be removed from the position for making insensitive remarks at a political rally in Mangochi district.
MCP secretary general, Richard Chimwendo Banda said the remarks by Chikwanje, who is also a parliamentarian, can kill democracy in the country if not addressed with urgency.
Chikwanje insinuated that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) should not be allowed to conduct rallies in the region saying it does not deserve that privilege, among other alleged provocative remarks.
Speaking during the press briefing today in Lilongwe, MCP secretary general, Richard Chimwendo Banda pleaded that the sentiments should be condemned entirely and do not have room in democratic society.
The secretary general argued that the recent actions by DPP officials that include stoning of President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in the Lower Shire is an indication that the party is not democratic hence it was booted out of power
“With this type of personality, the party should forget of coming back into power,” he said.
The secretary general has also asked other parties to uphold peace and unity during the campaign period and desist from promoting violence.
The briefing was also attended by MCP director of youth, Steve Baba Malondera and publicity secretary, Jessie Kabwila who both accused DPP of flouting democratic principles.
The police have since arrested the parliamentarian over the remarks.
“I can confirm that we have arrested honorable Daudi Chikwanje for making insensitive remarks,” said Peter Kalaya, national police spokesperson.
There has not been an immediate comment from DPP on the matter.
