Malawi asks StarTimes to incorporate local channels on satellite TV project
Malawi’s Secretary for Information and Digitalisation, Baldwin Chiyamwaka, has requested StarTimes Media to incorporate local channels into their satellite TV project, ensuring rural viewers access local programs alongside foreign content .
This appeal was made during the official launch of Phase II of the China Aid’s Access to Satellite TV for 10,000 African Villages project in Lilongwe.
Chiyamwaka hailed StarTimes for broadening rural villagers’ knowledge through global content but emphasized the importance of local programming.
“There is a need for channels like Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), and Times to be included on StarTimes’ ‘free-to-air’ list,’ he said.
The Access to Satellite TV for 10,000 African Villages project aims to promote transparency, accountability, and access to information.
StarTimes CEO, David Pan, assured that the company would consider the request and potential expansion to more villages.
By year-end, StarTimes plans to install 4,000 digital decoders, 400 solar projection satellite TV systems, and 200 digital TVs in public institutions and households.
