Malawi, UAE partnership to boost horticultural products exports

Patrick Botha: The expansion will enhance Malawi's product offerings

Malawi’s Ministry of Trade and Industry is collaborating with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to expand horticultural products shipping agreement, boosting exports of domestic fruits like mangoes, guavas, and mangosteens.

This partnership aims to increase Malawi’s market reach beyond the UAE.

According to Ministry spokesperson Patrick Botha, the expansion will enhance Malawi’s product exposure, with the understanding between Malawi and UAE Airlines remaining active and scalable, contingent upon a favorable business environment.

Botha said: “Resolving logistical challenges at Kamuzu International Airport, including screening, loading, and cold storage, is currently a priority.”

The Malawi Investments Trade Centre (MITC) is also working to identify additional markets for Malawian fruits, including mangoes, in the UAE and Gulf region.

Recent discussions with Lulu Hyper Markets may lead to the retailer becoming an outlet for Malawian horticultural products like mangoes and ginger.

Between 2019 and 2023, Malawi’s export of fresh or dried horticultural products averaged $2.04 million annually.

Botha emphasized that Malawian products are competitive with those from Kenya and Uganda, citing increased demand driven by retail and hospitality sectors.
