Naphiyo: We vote once in every 5 years

National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust has tipped the citizenry to patronize the voters’ registration exercise in large numbers for them to be able to vote in 2025 general elections.

NICE Trust’s Programs Manager, Christopher Naphiyo has sent out the tip as the registration is set to rollout on 21 October 2024 and it will be implemented in phases.

The exercise comes amid fears of voter apathy due to unfulfilled promises by the present leaders.

But Naphiyo hinted on the need to vote as this is the most effective way that people express themselves insofar leadership performance is concerned.

“We vote once in every 5 years and it is proper for people to realize this. When the registration starts, let every eligible voter take part,” he said.

He added: “Frustrations can result in two things which are ether boycotting or massively participating. We want to remind people that right to vote is a better way of expressing your dissatisfaction.”

He has since highlighted a number of activities their institution is implementing to ensure that every eligible voter is reached with appropriate information regarding the registration exercise.

“We are using different means to reach out to people with information on the voters’ registration. We do not want to leave someone behind,” he explained.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will hold the actual voter registration, after successfully implementing pilot voter registration.
