K185 million lost through mobile money fraud
Authorities at the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) have disclosed that 27,767 people in the country have fallen victim to mobile money fraud.
MACRA’s Consumer Affairs Officer, Brave Kaira told journalists that between January and July 2024, fraudsters duped unsuspecting consumers out of 185 million Kwacha.
Kaira noted that the number of mobile money fraud victims could be much higher, as some people do not bother to report incidents when they fall victim.
He revealed that mobile money fraud is mostly perpetrated by inmates at Zomba Maximum Prison
“To combat this, MACRA has employed measures such as installing scanning machines in prisons and blocking mobile phone gadgets used by fraudsters,” he said.
