CHRR demands justice for LL mob justice survivor
Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) is demanding justice for a woman who was set ablaze by some Airtel money agents in Lilongwe.
Carolyn Suleman, 21, is battling for life following fire burns she sustained for facilitating K800,000 Airtel money transfer to unknown tricksters.
It is alleged that the victim received a phone call from unknown person instructing her to visit any Airtel money agent to withdraw money.
She then approached one of the suspects who was providing Airtel money services at Malangalanga.
He then instructed the agent using Suleiman’s phone to make three more transactions to different people.
After completing the transaction the victim denied having cash insisting she unknowingly facilitated the conversation between the two.
This angered the Airtel money agent who together with his accomplices assaulted the victim before setting her on fire.
Commenting on the issue, CHRR executive director Michael Kaiyatsa who visited the girl at the hospital, stresses that: “Thecase needs to be expedited to ensure that justice prevails. Although critics are alleging that she was part of the syndicate, we are concerned about her,” said Kaiyatsa.
The CHRR bos is however concerned with the continued mobile money fraud in the country.
“It is time for mobile telecommunication companies come up with mechanisms aimed at protecting the citizenry from fraudsters,” noted Kaiyatsa.
Meanwhile, Lilongwe police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu has assured that everything is being done to get to the bottom of the matter.
“We have arrested Daud Yasin, 38, Francis Sadik, 31, and Alfred Phiri, 30. The three will soon be taken to court,” said Chigalu.
