Malawi closer to next level in T20 Qualifiers
Malawi’s Women’s U19 team is on the verge of securing Division One qualification in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division Two.
But they must first overcome Kenya in a crucial match today at Gahanga Cricket Stadium 2 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Both teams have enjoyed a strong start to the competition, with Malawi boasting 8 points from 4 games and Kenya trailing closely with 6 points from 3 games.
The teams are also separated by Net Run Rate (NRR), with Kenya holding a slight edge at 6.150 compared to Malawi’s 5.477.
A win for Malawi would significantly boost their chances of advancing to Division One.
Part of a Facebook post by the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) said: “The Malawi U19 Women’s Cricket National Team has shown remarkable prowess by securing a spot in the next stage of the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup sub-regional qualifiers.”
The team achieved this by clinching a decisive victory over Lesotho, winning by 154 runs. Esther Richard was the standout player of the match, taking 5 wickets, conceding only 4 runs, and maintaining an impressive economy rate of 1.00.
With a 100% winning record at the tournament, the team currently leads the table with 8 points. Their next game is against Kenya tomorrow morning.
The Malawi U19 Women’s Cricket National Team has made a strong start in the ongoing ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup sub-regional qualifiers, securing three wins out of three matches to top the table with 6 points.
In their first match, Malawi defeated Eswatini by 9 wickets, with Eva Kabwere earning the Player of the Match title after taking 6 wickets, conceding only 5 runs, and bowling 4 overs.
The team continued their winning streak in the second game by overcoming Sierra Leone by 8 wickets. Mercy Dimba was named Player of the Match for scoring 36 runs off 31 balls with a batting strike rate of 116.
In the third match, Malawi triumphed over Mozambique by 10 wickets, with Lucy Malino being voted Player of the Match after taking 3 wickets, giving up just 6 runs, and completing 4 overs.
These results place Malawi at the top of the standings with 6 points from three games, followed by Kenya and Botswana, each with 4 points from two games.
