Clubs cautioned against stagnant squads

Ascent Academy (In blue jersey) died fighting

A soccer analyst has cautioned women football teams to consider squad rotations to avoid over dependence on key players in major competitions.

This comes as Botswana’s Gaborone United defeated Ascent Academy 3-2 in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League yesterday in Blantyre.

This match served as COSAFA Qualifiers and the result means Ascent have been knocked out of the competition.

Ascent failed to keep up a good performance after a key player Faith Chinzimu picked up an injury early in the first half of the game.

A soccer pundit Henry Gome observed that the team performed better that Ntopwa Queens who represented the Malawi at the last edition of the competition that was staged in South Africa.

He said: “You can see that there has been an improvement since Ascent managed to win a game compared to Ntopwa who lost all their matches”

Ascent picked up their only 2-1 win against Eswatini’s Young Buffaloes to bag maximum points in the campaign which they have been booted out.

The team that guided them out of the tournament, Botswana’s Gaborone finished 1st with 5 points after 2 draws and a win after beating the hosts from behind in a thriller on Tuesday afternoon.

While admitting defeat, coach for the Malawi side Thom Nkolongo said: “The players were plagued by fatigue which affected their performance.”

He, however, pointed out that the continental competition has helped his side to gain experience.
