La Niña threatens Lakeshore businesses as water levels rise
The looming La-Nina weather condition is threatening lakeshore businesses, following prospects of continued rising water levels.
It is expected that LaNina will likely bring heavy rains that might contribute to rising water levels in Lake Malawi.
As it stands, Lake Malawi water level is already up with 45 meters compared to the same time last year.
Executive Director of the Tourism Council of Malawi Memory Kamthunzi says: “Malawi is sitting on a time ticking bomb and there is need for urgent action.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Lands says plans are in the pipeline to commence inspection of all lakeshore buildings.
It is said the exercise was supposed to be conducted last year but got delayed due to financial constraints.
