Rising Lake Malawi waters threaten tourism GDP

The annual tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution is likely to drop by K1 billion following the rising water levels of Lake Malawi.

This is according to the National Planning Commission (NPC) survey on Economic Impact of Lake Malawi Water Rise on Lakeshore Tourism.

The rising water levels occurred in Salima, Nkhotakota, Nkhatabay and Mangochi districts, where property worth K6.3 billion was destroyed.

The survey further indicates a loss of K2.5 billion in revenue from tourism activities.

NPC Research Manager Andrew Jamali said estimated food and accommodation GDP has dropped from K202 billion kwacha to K201 billion after the incident.

GDP is the monetary value of all finished goods and services made within a country during a specific period.
