DPP gears up for convention

About 2,600 delegates from across the country are expected to attend opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) national elective convention.
The two-day convention which will take place in Blantyre at the weekend, will ride under the theme: A Return to Proven Leadership: A Call to All Malawians in Restoring Hope, Rebuilding the Economy and Healing the Fractured Unity of Our Nation.
Chairperson for the organizing committee George Chaponda has revealed that former President Peter Mutharika will go unopposed as the party’s torch bearer.
He said: “All logistical arrangements including accommodation for the delegates, security and venue are in place. The delegates are expected to arrive on Saturday and depart soon after the event or on Monday” Chaponda explained.
Meanwhile, the DPP has announced that they have invited other political parties like the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), United Democratic Front (UDF) and UTM at their conference, fuelling speculation of a possible electoral alliance.
Commenting on the issue, political analyst Undule Mwakasungula said it is too early to lean on the idea that the invited parties are prospective political allies come the 2025 general polls.
“It is not clear as to what criteria the committee has used to choose who attends their party convention. Perhaps we should wait and see what follows after the convention if they indeed have plans to form political alliances to dethrone the governing Malawi Congress Party” Mwakasungula explained.
