NBS Bank has unveiled a K1 billion three-year sponsorship for the National Division League (NDL), set to commence in 2025.

The sponsorship, announced at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre on Wednesday evening, will provide K270 million for the 2025 season, increasing by 20% annually to account for inflation.

This initiative is part of NBS Bank’s 60th-anniversary celebrations and complements their existing three-year deal for the NBS Bank Charity Shield, which expires in 2026.

The bank has also increased the Charity Shield package to K43 million for the next season.

The NDL will replace regional premier leagues as the country’s second-tier competition, with the champions and runners-up earning automatic promotion to the TNM Super League.

NBS Bank CEO Kwanele Ngwenya emphasized the bank’s passion for football and commitment to developing the sport through this sponsorship.

The sponsorship includes exclusive naming rights, brand placement, digital marketing opportunities, and community events.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya welcomed the partnership, noting that 60% of the sponsorship will go to teams for various uses.

He told journalists that: “These best practices will enable us achieve our vision to attain football dominance in Africa.

“And if we talk about best practices, it means setting standards in the quality of football and putting quality controls in our competitions, especially the lower tier competitions, which are the base of our player development pathway,” Haiya further explained.

The NDL will comprise 12 teams in its inaugural season, with a revised structure from 2026. FAM aims to transform the game, develop talent, and achieve football dominance in Africa through this initiative.

Gomezgani Zakazaka, FAM’s Competitions and Communications Director said: “the inaugural National Division League will feature 12 teams, consisting of three teams relegated from the Super League and 9 teams from the regional premier leagues, specifically those that finish in positions two to four.”

The officials have affirmed that this structure will be in place for the inaugural season, with changes expected from 2026 onwards.
