Sunday’s battle between Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) sides, Soccer Rangers FC and Red Lions FC saw the latter being booted out of the 2024 FDH Bank Cup.

The preliminary round clash which was staged at Lunzu Community Ground in Blantyre, produced a 4-2 post match penalty result in favour of the hosts after ending in a one all draw during regulation time.

When they scored through Mathews Simbeye, the visitors dreamed to progress to the national level where they would withdraw handsomely but their *525# transaction was foiled by Chisomo Chiwanda who levelled matters to force the match into penalty shootouts.

The Rangers’ victory means they are in the round of 32 from their region along with Cobbe Barracks and Nyambandwe United which knocked out Mangochi All Stars 2-0 and Superfet 5-4 (on penalties after a barren draw) respectively.

While MMF Marine also qualified to the round of 32 after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Blantyre based Ntopwa FC, final team from the southern region will be determined by the match between Ndirande Stars and Ekhaya FC on Saturday to complete the number from the region.

Meanwhile, in from the Central Region Football Association, teams that have qualified to the round of 32 include last year’s quarterfinalists Santhe Admarc as well as Mitundu Baptist, Simbi FC, Blue Eagles and Ntcheu Warriors.

On the other hand, six sides namely; Iponga FC, Lube Masters, Raiply FC, Chihame All Stars, Chintheche United and Sporting FC have reached the round of 32 from the Northern Region Football Association.

Since the tournament started three seasons ago, the farthest a region team has gone was in 2022 when FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves played their senior in a final and in 2023 where Santhe Admarc from Kasungu reached the quarterfinal.

The 2024 FDH Ban Cup is being played to the tune of K150 million and the champion will walk away with K30 million.
