Nchalo Police Post in Chikwawa on Friday arrested Enasiyo Yembekeza, 66, and Patrick Jimu, 44, for allegedly possessing a live pangolin.

According to Chikwawa Police Spokesperson, Dickson Matemba, police acted on a tip-off from community members and arrested the suspects at Jombo Trading Centre in the district.

“The police responded very swiftly to the tip from members of the public and arrested the two who were offering the animal for sale under listed species.

“The pangolin was found hidden in a laptop bag and has since been handed over to officials at Majete Wildlife Reserve,” he said.

Matemba said the suspects will appear in court soon to face charges under Section 110(b) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.

Meanwhile, police in the district has commended the public for their support in combating wildlife crime.

Both Yembekeza and Jimu hail from Mponya Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Ngabu in Chikwawa.
