Mtalimanja pledges to hold credible elections.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) new Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja has pledged to hold free and credible 2025 elections.
Mtalimanja made the remarks after she was sworn in as MEC Chairperson along side the two newly appointed MEC Commissioners, reverend Phillip Kambilire and Limbikani Kamlongera in Lilongwe on Friday.
She said “Malawians should expect the continuation of the trajectory that MEC has been on to deliver free and credible elections to Malawians”.
She further emphasised that she will proceed with MEC programs that are already set in line with the coming 2025 elections while settling in.
“My priority now is on the by elections that are set to be conducted in Mangochi and Blantyre soon” added Mtalimanja.
Meanwhile Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda asked the three to remain independent and impartial as they take their positions at MEC.
“MEC is a constitutional and legally defined institution as such you must take your work more seriously and abide by the law” said Mzikamanda.
“You must pay more attention to your mandate as your work sometimes faces numerous accusations and never be distracted with challenges that come along with your duties” added Mzikamanda.
He then reminded the commission that elections need to be managed with the highest degree of confidence and integrity at all times.
