Gender equality campaigners are lobbying President Lazarus Chakwera to appoint a female Vice President to replace the late VP Saulos Chilima.

The public eagerly await the appointment of the new Vice President following the death of Chilima in a plane crash last week on June 10 in Mzimba.

The country’s constitution stipulates that the President shall appoint a new Vice President within seven days upon the death or resignation of the position holder.

The NGO Gender Coordination Network (NGOGCN) hints that the appointment of the female VP will increase women representation in top positions and politics.

NGO-GCN Chairperson Maggie Kathewera Banda believes Malawi has many capable and qualified women to assume the position of VP.

“We are looking forward to a woman being a vice president. This is an opportunity that the president has that he can appoint someone so when he is considering of appointing, he should also be looking out to appoint a female vice president and we have women that are capable

so I think it’s not a question of saying where are the women and do we have women, women ae there. Educated women, women that have experience, women that have proven themselves in the society to be women that can deliver” she said.

Meanwhile, the president has up until tomorrow to appoint Chilima successor.
