The Malawi Network of Older Persons (MANEPO) has reiterated calls for the authorities to support raising awareness and foster action to combat abuses against the elderly.

MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala has made the remarks following the commemoration of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The Day is observed on 15 June each year and was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution in 2011.

According to Kavala, it is estimated that by 2050, 1 in every 6 people will be aged 65 or over thereby increasing the vulnerability experienced by older persons to violence.

Kavala therefore calls for discussions around the development of inclusive policies and strategies to prevent and address elder abuse.

He stresses the need to promote innovative approaches to meet the diverse needs of older persons, enhancing their access to essential healthcare services.

He also cites inclusion in mental health support, nutrition, and other basic necessities, within humanitarian response frameworks.

MANEPO works around promoting and safeguarding the rights and dignity of older persons by ensuring they are not left behind, especially in times of crisis.
