Drug Fight Malawi worry over continued drug abuse amongst the youth.
Drug Fight Malawi has expressed worry over drugs and substance abuse amongst the youths in the country.
The organisation’s Executive Director Nelson Zakeyu said the situation needs concerted efforts amongst all players and the government taking the lead in the fight against drugs abuse.
“At the rate youths are taking drugs, it might compromise the future of the nation if no serious measures are taken,” Zakeyu lamented.
On the other hand, Zakeyu emphasized the need for the implementation of a drug fight policy to strategize drug and substance abuse fight in Malawi.
He says that although various quarters have been tirelessly working in the fight against drug abuse, there is no change due to the absence of the policy.
Zakeyu added “the policy was supposed to provide the roadmap, strategies, and actions to be carried out, but now the fight is done without proper direction which makes it hard”.
Homeland security ministry officials are yet to comment on the matter but years back government commenced consultations with various stakeholders on the policy.
According to the 2023 Drug Fight Malawi Survey, almost 50 percent of school-going youths are involved in drugs.
