The UNDP is reaffirming its resolve to strengthen local disaster management systems.

The remarks follow the launch on Friday of a 500 million kwacha worth of prefabricated emergency operation centers that have been assembled in Zomba, Karonga, Salima, Dedza and Phalombe districts.

UNDP resident representative, Fenella Frost, spoke to Capital FM after launching the Es that have been installed under the Scaling-Up the Use of Modernised Climate Information and Early Warning Systems Project.

On his part, commissioner for disaster management affairs, Charles Kalemba, asked local councils to utilise the centers, stressing DoDMA’s commitment to improving disaster management coordination and building resilience.

M-CLIMES is a Green Climate Fund, UNDP and Malawi Government-funded project aimed at supporting Malawi’s steps to saving lives and enhancing livelihoods at risk of climate-related disasters.

Among other notable interventions, the project supports the installation of community-based flood early warning systems- in eight districts.
