Authorities at the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has come out to explain that they do not have the capacity to spy on phone conversations.

This follows growing fears that the Revenue Assurance System (RAS) will be used to eavesdrop in conversations and intrude in people’s privacy.

MACRA Director General Daudi Suleman addressed this matter during a media breakfast for senior editors and managers on Friday in Blantyre.

Suleman indicated that the RAS is meant to ensure that consumers get value for money by getting reliable phone and internet connectivity.

He added that through the system, the regulator will be able to monitor revenue generated by telecommunication companies.
