High court to mete out sentence to woman.
The High Court in Lilongwe will on 25 July mete out its sentence on a 55-year-old woman convicted of murdering her husband four years ago.
Yesterday Thursday, Judge Mzondi Mvula revoked bail for Annie Mumba after finding her guilty of the heinous act on her spouse, Peter Mumba, a Chemistry professor at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Delivering his judgement, Justice Mvula noted that Annie had delayed to take Peter to hospital after he had complained that he was feeling unwell and that she opted to wait for an ambulance from Bunda when she had cars at home.
Mvula also cited several suspicious acts including that the convict left Mzimba for Lilongwe immediately after her husband’s burial and that her previous husband also died a sudden death.
He further highlighted the postmortem that was conducted after the body was exhumed three weeks after burial whose results confirmed acute poisoning.
Meanwhile, Annie’s lawyers are expected to present mitigation factors before her sentencing next month.
On their part, state lawyers from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions are calling for a stiff and punishment to send a strong warning that would deter would-be offenders.
Annie Mumba comes from Chituka village, TA Malengamzoma in Nkhata Bay.
