ESCOM project unburdens Chifunga infrastructure woes

Katsonga Phiri (center): We asked members to choose

Health service delivery is expected to improve at Chifunga Health Centre in Neno district after the completion of construction works at the site.

Residents of the communities in Senior Chief Mlauli were relocated to pave way for the Malawi – Mozambique power interconnection project.

Therefore, the electricity authorities, under law, are required to compensate individuals.

While launching the project works, Neno South parliamentarian Mark Katsonga Phiri said the majority of the community opted for fixed assets including houses and addition infrastructure at the health facility.

He said: “We asked members of the community to choose how to be compensated and most of them chose infrastructures including houses and additional building at Chifunga Health Centre.”

The additional infrastructure at the health centre means that more patients will be able to receive quality services.

The senior Health Surveilance Assistant at the facility William Kaipa stated that: “More infrastructure means that we will be able to cater to more patients. It will be less crowded which also means there will be minimal chances of spread of infections”

On his part, Senior Chief Mlauli expressed joy that the construction works of the Health Centre were coming to fruition.

“We were in dire need of a good health facility and after being approached by ESCOM and their Mozambican counterparts through this project, we felt relieved that our desire will be met,” Mlauli said.

Meanwhile, the area’s legislator, project facilitators ESCOM and concerned stakeholder have warned individuals to resist the selling of selling the newly built houses which are part of the compensation.
