Security concerns threaten Malawi’s sugar industry

Concerned -Gwengwe
Minister of trade Sosten Gwengwe has voiced serious concerns over a string of security incidents jeopardizing the nation’s sugar manufacturing sector.
The minister highlighted simultaneous challenges faced by major sugar producers such as Salima Sugar and Ilovo, suggesting potential foul play.
Gwengwe’s remarks come at a critical juncture for the industry, as it has only begun to stabilize recently following a period of scarcity and subsequent market overpricing.
Gwengwe therefore expressed government’s urgency in addressing these issues, stating that: “Our colleagues at homeland security have been alerted and they have sent their own team to see that they help investors.
“The ministry of homeland security is actively involved in addressing the situation to reassure investors and safeguard industrial operations.”
The minister’s remarks underscore the critical intersection of economic development and security in Malawi, with stakeholders closely monitoring efforts to mitigate threats and ensure the continued growth of the sugar industry.
