Madise is UAPS president; pledges for gender equality advocacy
The newly appointed first female president of Union for African Population Studies Forum (UAPS), Nyovani Madise has pledged to support women development in Malawi during her 4-year tenure in office.
Madise who is also director of research and sustainable development as well as head of the Malawi office of the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) was appointed during the 9th African Population Policy conference that brought together 25 countries in Africa.
Madise said aside the UAPS responsibilities she will increase her visibility in the country so as to inspire other women and girls on their capabilities.
Madise said: “l will make use of the position to be a model to girls in secondary schools for them to have greater aspirations beyond my achievements and ensure women are empowered to work harder in everything they do.”
Madise said she will work with various stakeholders on the aspect of women leadership representation for gender equality enhancement.
“Looking at population and development aspects of leadership we understand that gender equality can be achieved through having more women in decision making positions including in politics. In that way, they are able to advocate for more gender related policies and girl empowerment agendas,” narrated Madise.
UAPS forum is responsible for research of various aspects of population across Africa to facilitate policy making and proper allocation of resources and management of people.
