Women DJs to headline UMP festival
This year’s UMP Festival – The Evolution will have three female DJs namely Amtanga The DJ, La Perle The DJ and DJ Bubblegum as headliners of the event.
According to the organisers, Chitoliro Productionz, this is a quest to champion women creatives in the entertainment industry.
“A week ago, Chitoliro Productionz opened a public vote on social media for female DJs to headline UMP Festival 2024 – The Evolution slated from 25 to 28 October at Cape Maclear in Mangochi. We are proud to report that these three DJs received the highest number of votes,” reads part of the statement signed by Harold Kapindu who is the head of media for the UMP Festival.
Amtanga The DJ is one of the girls in a ladies’ music crew called Nyasa Queens and she has been in Malawi music industry for 10 years. To be become a DJ, Amtanga The DJ was inspired by DJ Zinhle and Uncle Waffles among others.
On the other hand, La Perle The DJ has been performing at a club in Dzaleka Refugee camp among other places since she arrived in the country from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 11 years ago. She also won the UMP Best Upcoming Female DJ Award in 2021.
DJ Bubblegum started Djaying professionally in 2017 fater being taught by her father apart from also being mentored by VJ Ice.
“Chitoliro Prodcutionz started off with the 50:50 initiative since the inaugural UMP Festival in 2009,” added Kapindu.
