480 people reached in Token Identifier Project
About 480 thousand customers have had their prepaid meters upgraded in the Token Identifier (TID) project.
ESCOM Limited rolled out the TID project in June last year, targeting 537,000 customers.
The project seeks to reconfigure all customer meters in compliance with new international requirements for transfer of electricity prepayment tokens.
Meanwhile, ESCOM public relations manager Kitty Chingota says there has been tremendous progress in the implementation of the project across all the major cities of Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Blantyre and Zomba.
“We have done all the major cities, Central Region, Eastern Region, Northen region and we have even gone further outside Salima, Liwonde Karonga and we are just remaining with few districts of Machinga, Chitipa, Nkhotakota and Likoma,” Chingota explained.
TID has a lifespan of 31.9 years and the current lifespan will expire by 24 November this year, the last upgrading operation was done in 1993.
The project is expected to be completed by June this year and the next prepaid meter software upgrade will take place in 2045.
