G4M drums support for youth in politics

A new organisation has been launched with the aim to foster youth participation and representation in politics in a bid to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2025 general elections.

Known as Generation 40 Movement or G4M, the grouping seeks to address the glaring lack of young voices in positions of power within the country.

Co-founder of the organisation, Maloto Chinkombero, explains that G4M’s multifaceted approach to achieving its goals will catalyse capacity building for aspiring political candidates to effectively compete against known politicians.

“While young people are actively participating in politics, we recognize the significant gap in representation, particularly in key decision-making roles. We are therefore here to provide capacity-building trainings to young people, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the political landscape effectively. This includes understanding Malawian politics, conducting successful political campaigns and engaging with voters,” Chinkombero said.

Chinkombero acknowledged that one of the challenges facing aspiring young politicians is the issue of financial resources, in a political environment often dominated by incumbents with considerable financial backing.

“We are not providing full financial support to individuals. Instead, we are working with self-starting youthful politicians, offering them encouragement, motivation and occasional support where needed. It’s crucial that we challenge the status quo and empower young people to overcome barriers rather than succumb to them,” Chinkombero stated.

As the country gears up for the 2025 general elections, the organization’s efforts may well pave the way for a more inclusive and dynamic political landscape, where the voices of young leaders are not only heard but actively sought after.
