MIA speaks out on contract awarding

The Malawi Institute of Architects (MIA) is appealing to the government to ensure accountability and transparency in awarding of architecture contracts.

MIA President Khumbo Chirwa made the appeal in Lilongwe this morning during the opening of the organisation’s four-day annual general meeting.

According to Chirwa, architects need to be given contracts based on merit instead connections to ensure quality services and professional works.

At the same event, the National Construction Industry Council-NCIC Executive Director Gerald Khonje asked architects to embrace creativity, quality and sustainable driven projects that withstand natural disasters.

Khonje also advised architects to increase their visibility, saying currently they are not visible enough on the ground.

The African Union Architect President Donatien Kesseyat also called for smart infrastructures and take advantage of various sustainable development goals.
