Chikwawa floods claim 3 lives

Three people have died while two others have sustained injuries in Chikwawa due to flash floods that occurred in the lower Shire district.
The three are an eight-year-old girl, a 55-year-old man as well as a woman whose age has not been established.
A report from the district’s council further indicates that a total of 1,683 households in Traditional Authorities Ngabu and Lundu have been affected.
Meanwhile, Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) spokesperson Chipiliro Khamula says the institution is set to provide relief assistance in affected areas.
“We have already made arrangements for the provision of relief assistance in the affected areas.
“So far, we are calling upon councils to ensure that communities at risk have moved to higher and safer areas as a matter of urgency in response to a warning by the Department of Water Resources that there will be flooding in most of the rivers across the country,” Khamula said.
DoDMA reports indicate that over 500 and 119 households have been displaced in Nkhotakota and Mangochi respectively due to rising water levels in Lake Malawi.
