MHRC wants speed in assenting to Older Person’s Bill
The Malawi Human Right Commission (MHRC) is pushing President Lazarus Chakwera to assent to the Older Person’s Bill following its passing in parliament on Friday.
The bill focuses on protecting, promoting and safe guarding the rights of older persons in the country.
MHRC executive secretary Habiba Osman believes the speedy enactment of the bill will expose other ills perpetrated on the elderly and spearhead action.
According to Osman, the commission is geared to continue raising awareness on the bill to ensure the public is aware of the laws pertaining to the attacks.
“We are motivated and fired up to continue the awareness of this bill because we also know that the rights of the elderly have really been threatened,” explains Osman.
Statistics shows that the country recorded 78 cases of violence against the elderly of which 25 were killed.
