Chakwera wants Malawi to host AFCON
President Lazarus Chakwera says he is eager to see Malawi hosting Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the near future.
Speaking at a Presidential dinner which he hosted at Kamuzu Palace in honour of players participating in the Four Nations tournament in Lilongwe, the Malawi leader said; “We are eager to host international sporting competitions like this Four Nations Tournament to strengthen our ties with other nations that we want to do business with for the growth of our economy.
“We are pursuing our projects with focus. We will stand this path for as long as it takes until that day in the future when we will have a capacity to host an Africa Cup of Nations.”
Chakwera also emphasised that sports development is part of human capital development strategy at the heart of Malawi 2063 blueprint.
On his part, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president, Fleetwood Haiya thanked the president for hosting them as well as the government for allowing the FA to host the tournament.
“I thank you the President for the kind gesture to host us this evening. We feel greatly humbled and honoured. This is your demonstration of commitment towards development of sports in general, and football in particular.
Haiya added that the tournament demonstrates the partnership of unity of purpose among football associations from the four countries of Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya adding that the initiative will be continuous.
