Court quashes former EGENCO CEO, another

High Court Judge Michael Tembo has dismissed an application by former EGENCO chief executive officer William Liabunya challenging his sacking.

Liabunya and former director of corporate Affairs Videlia Mluwira challenged a decision to send them on forced leave and how the lower court handled their matter.

This is a case where earlier Liabunya obtained an injunction against the decision pending a forensic audit at EGENCO.

“The court was ready for the hearing of the matter but both Liabunya and his accomplice, together with their lawyers were not available. So, the court proceeded to have the matter dismissed with a direction that it will re-issue a reason to the ruling later,” said Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda after the court proceedings.

In October 2023, the then secretary to treasury MacDonald Mafuta Mwale said there would be a forensic audit to investigate on how the parastatal responded after Cyclone Ana and Cyclone Gombe which damaged Kapichira Hydropower Station in Chikwawa.

The two cyclones damaged the power generation site, leading to persistent and prolonged power rationing.
