Female artists need social media – Leslie
Social media has been touted as a critical tool which female artists can use to market their music.
Local Afropop artist Leslie Moyo, commonly known by her stage name ‘Leslie’ observes that female musicians can exploit the existence of internet to market their music in a male dominated industry.
She laments that among others, discrimination against females create a gap among, the two gender in the music industry.
“It is very challenging to create music in a male dominated music industry because there is so much discrimination from the male side, mostly. This makes it difficult for females to approach the male singers for collaborations,” laments Leslie.
The Romeo na Juliet singer believes that engaging fans through social media can create familiarity among male artists.
She is however against the idea of explicitly marketing her music as some trendy female musicians are doing.
An upcoming South African based Malawian female musician Love Sinsamala known by her stage name ‘Kiccola Sincane’ concurs with Leslie by lamenting that music producers are guilty of downgrading female artists.
“As a budding artist, I have experienced so many challenges when it comes to approaching music producers. They opt for male artists than female artists,” claims the foreign based local musician.
Kiccola Sincane recently released a song titled ‘ekha which mainly talks about a one sided love life.
