DODMA commend stakeholders for maize distribution
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) is commending efforts by various stakeholders in providing relief maize to the needy.
For instance, Founder of the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church Prophet Shepherd Bushiri on Wednesday started distributing grain to some vulnerable families at Nathenje in TA Mazengela, Lilongwe through the Shepherd Bushiri Foundation.
Minus Lilongwe, the initiative has gone to other areas in Ntcheu, Mulanje and Thyolo among others.
The initiative is aiming to reach out to at least one million families across the country and so far about 50, 000 families have already received the staple grain.
Recently, Chilanga CCAP church under Nkhoma Synod also rolled out a relief program, distributing 500 bags of maize to the needy.
Following suit, Apostle Clifford Kawinga of the Salvation for All Ministries International also provided bags of maize flour and other food items worth K65 million to about 2000 hunger-stricken families of Inkosi Kwataine in Ntcheu district.
This, according to DODMA commissioner Charles Kalemba, complements the government efforts in addressing the hunger situation.
“We are very thankful for anyone who is assisting during this period. Let us not leave this gesture to these individuals only, but even those of us from urban areas, we can go and help our mothers and our grannies in the villages. It the Umunthu principle at work,” Kalemba explained.
Currently, many Malawians continue to face hunger, as projected in the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report, with some reportedly going days without food.
Meanwhile, ADMARC depots also continue to remain with no grain, worsening the situation as vendors have exploited the market with a bag of maize being sold as high as K70,000.
